Is the MakeResume resume builder free?

You can build, edit, and preview a full resume for free, with no card required. Downloading is where the limit sits: PDF export on the free plan works on two templates — Half Tone and Executive. The other 70 templates, and Word export, need a paid plan. The ATS checker is free and does not require an account at all.

Are the resumes ATS-friendly?

Every template is built to parse cleanly through applicant tracking systems, with standard section headings, selectable text, and a clean structure. You can also run your resume through our free ATS checker before you apply.

Can AI write my resume for me?

Yes. The builder suggests summaries, achievement-focused bullet points, and role-specific skills, so you start from a strong draft instead of a blank page.

Can I import an existing resume?

You can upload a PDF or DOCX file and the builder will parse your details into a fully editable resume in seconds.

What file formats can I download?

PDF on every plan, and Word (.docx) on paid plans. Send PDF unless the posting asks for something else — it locks your formatting, where a Word file can reflow on the recipient's machine. Recruitment agencies are the most common exception, since they often reformat before submitting you to a client.

Which template should I choose?

Match it to how the application is screened rather than to taste. Large employers, healthcare, finance, and government route applications through a parser first, so a single-column ATS or simple layout is safest. Two-column templates read well for humans but can be misread by stricter systems — avoid them for federal applications. Design-led roles are the one case for more visual character, and even then the portfolio should carry it while the resume stays parseable.

Can I edit my resume after downloading it?

Yes. Your resume stays saved and editable in your account, so you can come back and tailor a fresh version for each application rather than starting over. Changing template later keeps your content intact — you are not locked into the layout you started with.
