People who want to run something still face a fork at the start: finish school, stack work experience, or take a risky start-up path. Established leaders say communication, problem-solving, and time management are the top three skills for success. You pay for those skills either in tuition, in years on the job, or in the risk of building a company from nothing.

56% of independent business leaders do not have a diploma, and you can still become a boss without a degree. College still offers things other routes rarely bundle: structured learning with a support network; time for low-risk experiments through coursework and incubators; ties into business and politics; and a large personal network — in business school, a cohort of future leaders. You might succeed without university. You could become a better operator by going. Where you go still matters. Some schools promise a denser network. Some just keep turning out people who later list C-suite titles. Rankings below are by raw count and by leaders per 1,000 alumni. If you are still choosing a major or writing the education section of a resume, treat this as context — not a guarantee.

What did we count?

We compiled university lists for the U.S., UK, Australia, and Canada, recorded alumni counts on each school's LinkedIn page, then searched for alumni with CEO or similar titles and ranked schools by business leaders per 1,000 alumni. Only universities with more than 25k alumni on LinkedIn were included.

“Similar” here means C-suite strings we searched for: CEO, CFO, COO, CTO, CIO, and CSO. A school with a huge alumni base will always look large on raw counts. The per-1,000 figure is the one that answers “if I go here, how common is a leadership title among people who listed this school?” LinkedIn is not a census of every graduate, and job titles are self-reported. The ranking is still a useful comparison of the public professional graph.

What are the key findings on universities and business leaders?

Harvard leads the world on raw LinkedIn leadership titles in this sample. Smaller specialist schools — Babson, Bond, Royal Roads — lead on hit rate. Oxbridge dominates the UK on both measures, in different ways.

Do U.S. military schools produce more business leaders?

America's Ivy League names travel well, but they are not the whole story. Only three of them sit in the top ten by raw count of business leaders, and only one makes the table for the highest proportion of leaders among alumni.

Harvard University produces the most business leaders in total, with 41,118 of its 488,238 alumni on LinkedIn listed as CEO or similar. Not all of those titles sit at the same altitude: a separate study found that 41 Harvard graduates are among the leaders of Fortune 500 companies, nearly twice the University of Pennsylvania's count. That group includes the CEOs of Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, General Electric, and McDonald's. The ten colleges most effective at producing business leaders include only one Ivy League school (Stanford). Four of them are military schools. A military background “can develop leadership, project management and critical thinking skills that transform soldiers into logistical planners, great team members and agile thinkers,” according to FinDec CEO and former Battalion Executive Officer Michael Lee. “These are qualities and talents that add value to civilian jobs that can help organizations succeed.” If you are translating service into a civilian teamwork story, those are the skills to prove with examples, not slogans.

Oxford and Cambridge are the UK's oldest universities and keep an old rivalry; Cambridge splintered from Oxford more than 800 years ago. Together they produce more business leaders than any other UK university, with Cambridge winning on sheer numbers (26,688 vs. 20,659).

Cambridge has over 80,000 more graduates on LinkedIn, so Oxford can claim the highest proportion (73.6 per 1,000) who are now business leaders — Lastminute founder Martha Lane Fox among them. Allowing for scale, Cranfield University and the University of Wales also enter the top ten. Cranfield alumni include the founders of Cobra Beer, Moonpig, and Hotel Chocolat, and the CEOs of Barclays Bank and Rolls-Royce.

Does Bond University offer an alternative path to leadership in Australia?

Yes, on hit rate. Bond produces 60.6 business leaders per 1,000 graduates, the highest share of any Australian university in this sample. UNSW leads on raw count.

Australia's Group of Eight universities are known for billion-dollar budgets and research. They account for only half of the top ten when you measure by total leaders or by proportion.

The five Australian universities with the most business leaders are also the ones with the highest enrolment levels — though not in the same order. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) jumps to the top, with 14,275 of its 251,960 LinkedIn graduates listed as bosses. UNSW houses a business school and, inside that, the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM); the Financial Times ranks the school's MBA among the top 100 worldwide. One of UNSW's best-known graduates is Mike Cannon-Brookes. The billionaire founder and co-CEO of Atlassian funds a substantial scholarship for the Computer Science BSc at his alma mater.

For the best shot on proportion, two non-Go8 schools jump to the top. Bond University and the University of New England produce more business leaders per graduate than any other Australian college in this sample. Bond opened on Queensland's Gold Coast as late as 1989 and is consistently ranked as the country's most student-friendly university. “To choose Bond takes bravery, and it takes focus,” says David Baxby, Bond graduate and former co-CEO of the Virgin Group. “To go mainstream with your peers, that is the easy route. People who are willing to take a risk, make a conscious choice and not just go with the flow are the people who are really getting on in this world.”

Why is McGill second to Royal Roads University in Canada?

McGill ranks second on both raw count and proportion. Royal Roads has the highest Canadian hit rate at 69.2 leaders per 1,000 alumni. The University of Toronto leads on raw count because of scale.

Times Higher Education ranks three Canadian universities among the world's top 50, and all three turn out graduates who later list leadership titles. Only one of those schools — McGill, in Montreal — is seriously competing for the most effective producer of business leaders on a per-alumni basis.

With 68% more full-time undergraduates than its nearest competitor, it is no surprise the University of Toronto produces significantly more business leaders than any other Canadian university. The school is also known for innovation, and sitting in a major international business city helps. Five Canadian prime ministers are among Toronto's alumni, and former Chief Economist, CEO, and president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business Catherine Swift received her BA and MA in Economics there.

McGill is number two for producing business leaders, both in absolute terms and proportionally. The school counts Les Vadasz, founding member and executive VP of Intel, among its alumni. Royal Roads University still has the best hit rate by a clear margin. Graduate Kellie Garrett, Senior Vice President of Farm Credit Canada and once ranked among the 100 Most Powerful Women, has this to say of leadership: “Persistence is important, for sure, but mental toughness includes self-awareness, self-compassion, grit, maintaining a positive mindset, confidence, resilience and an unwavering commitment to your goals.”

Is a high hit-rate university the only path to a C-suite?

To find the number of business leaders, we searched for alumni with any of these terms as job titles: “CEO OR CFO OR COO OR CTO OR CIO OR CSO.” We then ranked universities by the number of business leaders and by leaders per 1,000 alumni. Only universities with more than 25k alumni on LinkedIn were considered.

The data was collected in December 2022. LinkedIn membership and title conventions change; treat the tables as a 2022 snapshot of the public professional graph, not a forecast of who will run companies in 2030.
